Timemator does a brilliant job at tracking time, but billing should be done by hand (even if there a nice summary we can look at). So it works for few clients and few tasks. Timemator lives in the menubar, but watches the system for certain files, or folders, that when opened/accessed, starts a timer for a customizable project, client, etc. That saves us time sifting through to select the current project, but also protects against forgetfulness, because often we'll move from project to project and completely forget to set a bill timer. > > **Cons**: This may not be the developer's fault, but automatic time tracking doesn't work so well in certain apps. Again, this is probably because of how macOS shares info. For example, when we open a project in Final Cut Pro, Timemator only sees that FCP is open, not which project we're working on. It would be nice to see a notification registering we're in FCP, then asking which project we'd like to apply the timer to. There's an option to track EVERYTHING on your system, then apply timers to projects later, but that seems overkill for us and involves spending time on another task we didn't have before getting the software. > > I was actually surprised to see Timemator here, but maybe that's because we're new users. In the few months of buying the software, it's whipped my timing into shape. Automatic tracking has been the boon, though. Forgetting to start a timer or log was our biggest issue and now, no longer. We don't really use the billing options because we already have software for that in our workflow.
